BACKFLOW occurs when the flow is water from the supplier to the consumer is reversed through hydraulic conditions causing the direction of flow to come from the consumer back to the supplier. Surprisingly enough, this is not an uncommon occurrence.

The water supplier cannot control the consumers distribution system. Through a backflow condition, either polluted or contaminated water can be introduced into the suppliers water system and into other consumers drinking water.

A backflow prevention assembly must be installed at the point of the cross-connection to prevent the condition of backflow from occurring.

These backflow prevention assemblies are state mandated and must be tested annually to insure proper and continued working operation to prevent backflow from occurring. They must also be tested upon installation and after a repair is made.

Examples of who needs a backflow prevention assembly are anyone with an alternate water source such as a spring, stream, or well, anyone with an irrigation system, or two or more meters serving one establishment, commercial and professional buildings with fire sprinklers, lab or photo equipment, boilers, etc

POTABLE WATER is safe for human consumption.

NON-POTABLE WATER is unsafe for human consumption.

POLLUTANTS are substances which may affect color, taste or odor of the potable water, but does not pose a direct threat to human health through consumption or exposure.

CONTAMINANTS are substances which, when introduced into the potable water system,  poses a direct threat to human life or health through consumption or exposure.

CROSS-CONNECTIONS are physical connections between drinking water pipes and water that is not meant for human consumption.

BACK-SIPHONAGE occurs when there is a lowered pressure between the potable and non-potable water supply. These conditions typically occur during high demand in the public water main, such as fire fighting operation or a water main break. This can cause a partial vacuum which siphons pollutants or contaminants into the potable water supply through an unprotected cross connection.

BACK-PRESSURE occurs when the pressure from the consumer is greater than the supplier - an elevated pressure exists between the potable and non-potable source. These conditions can occur during installation of pumps, boilers and other equipment which heat water.
